December is full of family get togethers, office parties, shopping, baking and decorating.  It is so easy to get caught up in all the activities the season brings.  For some of us this is a rough time of year, it can bring on depression as we mourn the loss of those friendships lost during our drinking days or anxiety as we try to be and do all things that we think is expected of us.  As the new month begins lets ‘Discover the Goodness Within” and reach out to those less fortunate than us.  This can be done by volunteering at many organizations, food shelves, churches.  Let’s keep our focus on others, helping when needed, offering a smile, a helping hand, or just listening to one another.  We also need to take time for reflection, being thankful for all we have including our sobriety.  Now is the time to “Make a Brand New Ending” by focusing on others and not get caught up with the demands of the holiday season.  It is in the “Giving” that we find the true meaning of the season.

Change is hard yet we all live through many changes in our lives.  The most important change we made is when we gave up our old drinking habits and became sober.  How scary that was and we were so very afraid but out lives have been enriched by that change.

We at  Wendell’s have experienced change also.  In July, Ken, our Sales Manager left our office to pursue other interests. In October, Mark will join our staff as Sales Manager.  While we were all “comfortable” with Ken’s managing style, it is scary to think of having to learn another Manager’s style.   We can create many fearful things in our minds about what this change is going to do to us personally as well as professionally.  What we need to learn and do is embrace this change, welcome it as a stepping stone to make us stronger and better at what we do and who we are.  This attitude can work in our daily lives as well.  We need to let go of the fear that prevents us from stepping out of our comfort  zone and grow.  As Eleanor Roosevelt said “We must do the things we think we cannot do”.  I challenge all of us to let go of one fear – step out even if it makes us feel uncomfortable and grow.

Nature holds up a mirror so we can see more clearly the ongoing processes of our growth and renewal taking place in our lives.

One of our new coins – BRM 146 – You Can Achieve Your Dreams/Dare to Dream is a very powerful challenge. It challenges us to dream big – achieve our goals. The most important goal we have achieved is our sobriety but it can’t end there. We have learned a whole new way of living and we must go on and share this new life with those around us. We must believe we are destined for good things but we must be motivated and dream big enough to reach that new height. What a wonderful journey!

One of the new Affirmation medallions says “Discover the Goodness Within” with “Acts of Kindness are never wasted” on the reverse side. How powerful and yet scary these statements can be. In the political arena we are in right now, we are increasingly hearing negative statements thrown about by the candidates in the hopes of making the other candidate look incompetent. How easy it is to get caught up in the negativity that surrounds us. We find negative feelings and acts in our homes, in the workplace and even in the shopping malls. This medallion challenges us to find the goodness within ourselves. We all are good but we must be willing to show our goodness to the world especially when it is not the popular thing to do. We can do this by our words but also by acts of kindness, even the smallest act can make someone else feel good.

Next time you find yourself feeling negative, try the rule: For every negative statement I make about a person, place or thing, I must make TWO positive statements about the person, place or thing.

We can so easily fall into the trap of self pity, thinking that life is too complicated. We are unhappy with ourselves , our families and even our friends. We tend to rely on others to make us happy, feel needed and useful. What a relief it is when we finally come to realize that our happiness comes from within.

Our own attitude about life directs our actions and gives us a purpose. We have learned in our recovery that alcohol or any other drug of choice gave us a false sense of peace and happiness and now we are learning that it isn’t people or things that give us happiness and purpose but our own attitude. We’ve come to the realization that Every Day Matters and as long as we keep a good attitude the whole world is our playground. We are not exempt from the storm but we’ve learned to dance in the rain.
